A product come of age. - superb image editing software

By A Common Reader TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD-ROMI have been using Photoshop Elements since 2004 and have upgraded to the latest version every year since version 4. I have tried every other photo-editing program over the years but Elements has the best combination of power and usability of any. It is ideal photo-editing for digital photographers providing most of the tools from Photoshop plus many features which Photoshop users envy. I also use it for adjusting photographs of paintings for a local art society and Elements is the only software I have found which is capable of refining colour to the demanding standards of artists.
Elements comes with a powerful organiser/gallery application which is capable of dealing with many of thousands or photographs. I have 15,000 photos in the Organizer and every time I upload more photos I use keywords for places, people, events etc. This is really easy to do and together with the timeline function makes sure that I can easily find any photo I am looking for. This version of the organizer has new functions for searching by people, places, events and georgraphical locations which improve the search system even more.
There are four levels of editing available - photofix (quick and easy fixes for common problems from the Organizer screen) , then in the Editor itself there is "quick" for many basic fixes, "guided" which provides step by step guided edits, and "expert" for those who wish to use all the layers/filters/masks etc which are the main reason you would use Elements rather than Picasa or other free software.
Version 11 is fast and it all hangs together really well. There are lots of small improvements - for example, I find the rationalisation of selection tools very welcome and much overdue. The new tools options bar along the bottom of the edit screen is much easier to use and I appreciate the larger size of everything. In a program as comprehensive as Elements it is perhaps inevitable that a small number of bugs will slip through testing but I have yet to find any in this version. The general consensus on Elements forums is that this version has fixed the known bugs from previous versions.
I have not always felt that the new versions add much to previous versions and last year I came to the conclusion that Elements was becoming too much of a mish-mash of unrelated functions (although it was still the best photo-editing package if you didn't want to go for full Photoshop). I am pleased to say that this year, version 11 is the first upgrade for a long time which I am really pleased with. Its a great improvement on earlier versions. It looks better and feels better - it gives a much better impression of being a fully integrated package with real logic behind the design.
One advantage of using Photoshop Elements is the wide range of training material available. I recommend buying Photoshop Elements 11: The Missing Manual (Missing Manuals) (Missing Manuals) by Barbara Brundage which goes into a tremendous level of detail in describing the functions of this powerful software. Also watch out for Scott Kelby's book on Elements 11 when it comes out as these are always excellent.
Finally, if you want to get serious about colour, it might be worth buying a monitor calibrator such as Pantone Huey PRO. This will ensure that your monitor is adjusted for colour and ambient light. Without making sure that your monitor is calibrated correctly you are shooting in the dark when it comes to colour correction.

You won't need anything else
By Deano

This product is perfect if you need some extra help in preparing for your tests. I bought the bike product from the same company a few months back and passed my theory test first time. I now need to gain my full driving licence for my new job so thought I'd give this one a go.
I've been using this now for a few days and have spent quite a considerable amount of time on the theory and hazard part. I like the fact that you can take a test based on the questions that you have got wrong in the past or haven't yet seen. This is ideal if you don't want to trawl through all the questions that you already know the answers to.
The braking distance simulator is a nifty piece of kit. You simply set the speed of two cars and see the extra distance the faster car takes to come to a stop. I have always struggled to get my head around braking and stopping distances but this has helped loads.
I've only had a quick look at the driving lesson videos up to now but I'm impressed with what I've seen so far.

By Stephen Citynskyj-Amazon Verified Purchase

I have been using Microsoft Office for about 25 years, and have used just about every version. My special area of interest is Microsoft Word, which I have written with and programmed professionally for a living for most of that time.

If you have used Office 2007, the look of Office 2010 applications will be familiar. The most obvious change is that the Office button has gone, replaced by a new File tab just left of the Home tab. The File tab is where you'll find many document-related features, such as information (properties), recent files list, new document creation, sharing, help, and of course printing. All these features have been improved, though none more than the print feature, which has had a major overhaul. It is now easier to use. Its new layout has plenty of space to explain options, and it offers one of the best print-previews I have ever seen outside a professional DTP package.
The ribbon may now be customized. This takes a bit of fiddling, but it is quite easy if you take a moment to watch one of the tutorials on Microsoft's website. This enables you to add any command you like to the ribbon, including macros.
Some of the new text effects in Word are cool-looking but not especially useful to commercial authors. For example, reflections under headings look nice, but nobody would seriously entertain using them in a business presentation or a user guide. However, they do offer some fun design options for informal documents.
PDF-making is now built-in. It used to be available only as a free download (due to a spat between Microsoft and Adobe). The PDFs it makes are acceptable but lack the quality and features of Adobe PDF offerings. That said, you may improve your PDF output by installing a free package such as Nitro PDF, which makes better quality PDFs
The inclusion of OneNote is a plus. OneNote has been overlooked my many users, but it is a powerful note-making tool. I use it to jot ideas for projects. The ability to drop any file into a OneNote page makes it a handy place to dump pictures, video, audio comments, documents and website links for reference.
My only gripe is that, yet again, almost nothing has been added to VBA - the macro programming language built-in to Office applications. Most people don't use it, but it is the most powerful feature in Office. With it, you can make Word, Excel and so on, do just about anything you want it to do. If you can master VBA, then you will have absolute control over Office and the things you create using it.
We've installed Office 2010 on a couple of Windows 7 laptops, and an old Pentium M-based Windows XP laptop. All were fresh installations, and all worked fine. I've read many reviews here that have complained about the terrible installation process, but I had no problems at all. Putting software and hardware clashes aside, the trick is to choose CUSTOM installation (there's an option for this after you enter your licence code). That way you can choose NOT to install the demos of Microsoft Access and Microsoft Outlook. I am startled at how responsive it is in XP, with such a low-powered CPU. It installs in about 1.5GB, which is not bad these days.
Once you have installed it, I recommend clicking the "Continue Online" button to download and install all the updates (there are quite a few). These patch a few problems and generally bring your installation up to date.
Overall it's a pleasing step-up from Office 2007, especially with regard to the new File tab. The new features are not earth-shattering, but I have found them useful and worth the money. For about £25 per licence, it's a relatively inexpensive way to stay up to date with Microsoft Office.
For customers buying a PC who need Office for their new PC only, and don't need to upgrade other home PCs, a Product Key Card provides another way to purchase Office with a PC.

By K. Trebell VINE™ VOICE
Windows 8 runs well but is very different and the new tablet focused interface is somewhat jarring on a desktop PC. That this has been designed for platform devices to compete with the dominance of Apple is very apparent in it's whole design.
When you boot, the first thing you see is the new Start Screen. This has replaced the old start menu and pulls apps and services together into this one screen presented as "live tiles" integrating deeply with Windows Live and it's services.
The look and feel is now very clearly optimised for tablets and it's going to be a shock to the system for a lot of people and you have to question whether it's of any real use to Windows 7 users who have all they need.
Programs are all now available via the "apps" search from the start screen, you need to search for them and can then pin them to there or your task bar. Once you start to get used to where things are it does fall into place. A tip for easier navigation is to press the windows key and just start typing the name of what you want to do.
If you prefer to work with the desktop in the traditional way then you'll want to hit the "desktop" option from the start screen.
I've tested a range of my programs and most worked fine for me. The only thing I've had to change was to switch to using Windows Defender for anti virus as my old one didn't work anymore.
Windows 8's main strength is in performance. It runs well and is slightly snappier than Windows 7 was. Having said that, by far the biggest boost you can give your system is to install a Solid State drive, that brings huge gains rather than small boosts.
So windows 8... runs well but is very different and I couldn't recommend it for those happy with their current set-up.
